Allantoin

Allantoin was first discovered by an Italian physician (Michele Francesco Buniva) and a French chemist (Louis Nicolas Vauquelin) in 1800.  In nature, Allantoin is found in the comfrey plant, horse chestnut, and bearberry.  It is obtained from natural sources; however, for cosmetic use it is normally prepared in a synthetic format.

Allantoin appears as a white powder in its raw form and is also created as a result of oxidation of uric acid and is a metabolic product in many species including plants, bacteria, and animals.

Historically, Allantoin was used to promote wound healing and treat skin ulcers.  One of the key benefits of Allantoin is that it is non-irritating to the skin.  It has the ability to shed dead skin cells and is helpful in treating scars.

It is understood that Allantoin cleanses away necrotic (dead) tissue and as a result speeds up growth of new, healthy tissue.  Since Allantoin stimulates this new and healthy tissue growth, epithelial (on the surface of the skin) healing may take place.  Allantoin has been shown to improve hydration levels and healing of damaged skin.

On studying Allantoin, scientists have not found any risks or side-effects in its use.  It does not cause acne or breakouts and is suitable and safe for all skin types.
