The use of aloe leaf juice has been used around the world for millennia. Historical sources suggest aloe vera trade routes were established around the Red Sea and Mediterranean Sea (near the Arabian Peninsula) as far back as the fourth century BC. Around 1550 BC, it was first referenced in an Egyptian papyrus. However, archeologists were able to discover the plant has been used in a medicinal capacity for closer to 4000 years.
It is a cactus-like plant that grows in hot, dry climates. The aloe plant has three-sided fleshy leaves each with three layers. The outer layer is the thickest and is the rind which protects the inner layers; it also manufactures carbohydrates and proteins. The middle layer has a bitter sap. Its inner layer has a clear gel inside it which is 99% water plus amino acids, lipids, vitamins, and sterols. The plant has yellow flowers that produce numerous seeds.
