Castile soap originated in the Castile region of Spain during the 12th century. This area was a primary soap making location for centuries. It was originally made from pure olive oil but now contains different amounts of a variety of different plant oils. The most notable characteristics of Castile soap is that it is readily biodegradable, non-toxic, and naturally hypoallergenic.
Our castile soap product (which includes distilled water) effectively provides an ideal alternative to cleaning hands. It does this by destroying the proteins in germs and bacteria without the drying effects common to alcohol-based hand cleaning products.
Our product (Balanced Cleanser) was tested in a clinical lab at the college where I did my medical training. It was tested using GloGerm. This liquid is used in training for aseptic technique, proper hand hygiene, and infection control. Our GloGerm test results showed removal of over 99% of the germs on my hands, making it as effective as an alcohol-based product. One small area on a hangnail showed residual GloGerm, but my fingers, web spaces, palms, and back of my hands were completely germ free.
CAUTION: If you choose to acquire your own castile soap, it is important to dilute it with water as concentrated castile soap will irritate the skin. It should not be mixed with acidic ingredients (like citrus or vinegar) due to its alkaline nature.
