Mānuka Honey

According to the website “100% Pure-New-Zealand-Honey: “Real mānuka honey only comes from Australia and New Zealand. It is made from the nectar bees collect from the flowers of the native mānuka bush (leptospermum scoparium). It is a combination of the nectar and the way the bee turns it into honey that gives it its unique properties.” https://www.purenewzealandhoney.com/why-manuka-honey/what-is-manuka. The plant only flowers a few weeks per year, so there is not much time for mānuka honey to be processed.

Research conducted in the 1980’s showed benefits of this special honey and identified unique therapeutic benefits. Consequently, there has been increased global demand for this treasured product. “Studies have uncovered that bacteria with resistance to modern antibiotics (becoming superbugs) cannot develop resistance to the activity of mānuka honey (Blair et al. 2009). Mānuka effectively inhibits problematic bacterial pathogens, unlike any other known antimicrobial, with attempts at generating honey-resistant bacterial strains in the laboratory to be unsuccessful.”

“Numerous scientific studies show that Manuka honey kills superbugs and stimulates wound healing. Early 32 scientific research into mānuka honey stimulated significant interest and further research, enhancing our understanding of the health benefits of mānuka honey. Original research on Manuka honey was carried out by Dr Peter Molan at the Honey Research Institute at the University of Waikato in New Zealand. His findings gave rise to a significant interest in the potential for Manuka honey to be used in wound dressings and care of complex ailments, including diabetic leg ulcers, and a replacement for pressure dressings. Healing time was decreased, patient comfort increased and scar formation was minimized.” [Emphasis added] – https://manukaaustralia.org.au/science/
