Arrowroot is obtained from the rootstock of several tropical plants, most notably the Maranta arundinacea. It is believed to have originated in South America’s northwestern regions. This incredible root is distributed in several countries including India, the Philippines, Indonesia, Sri Lanka, and Australia.
To convert arrowroot into powder form involves mechanical mashing of the rootstock into a pulp. Then the starch is separated from its fibrous component using a screen. It is then dried and ground into a fine powder.
Arrowroot has extensive health properties and has been used for thousands of years. Some of these health properties include the healing of wounds and as a natural antidote to toxins. It is a natural humectant (attracts and retains moisture) and is ideal for dry or sensitive skin.
It is now used primarily in food products as an alternative to corn starch.
